What a metadata viewer shows you

A metadata viewer opens the hidden fields that travel inside a file and lists them in plain language. The picture, the page, or the sound itself stays exactly as it was.

Metadata is the record a file keeps about itself. It can hold the date the file was made, the device or the software behind it, the size and the shape of the content, and dozens of technical fields a normal viewer never shows.

This app asks for the full field set rather than the short summary that most readers stop at. What comes back is everything the file exposes, grouped into labelled sections you can read from top to bottom.

The file you upload is not changed. The report is a separate document that opens on this page.

Photo metadata viewer for camera and EXIF data

A photo metadata viewer reads the EXIF block that a camera or a phone writes at the moment the shutter closes. It is the richest metadata most people ever handle.

Depending on the device, that block can name the make and the model, the lens, the exposure settings, the orientation, and the date and time of the shot. Editing software adds entries of its own on top.

The report lists the fields your file actually carries, so a picture exported by another app can show fewer of them than one straight off the camera.

Check where a photo was taken

Image metadata often carries the place a photo was taken, and a metadata viewer is how you find out. Phones write the latitude and the longitude straight into the picture whenever location services are on.

Those coordinates stay in the file when you send it on. Anyone who receives the photo can read them the same way you just did, which is worth knowing before a picture goes to a marketplace listing or a public post.

The report lists the location fields with everything else it found. If you would rather they were not in the file at all, the metadata remover takes them out.

PDF metadata viewer: fonts, images, and page size

A PDF metadata viewer should show more than the title and the author. Upload a PDF here and the report adds three sections that most readers never open.

Embedded Fonts lists every typeface the document carries. Embedded Images lists the pictures inside it. Page Dimensions reads the MediaBox and reports the size of each page in points.

That is the detail a print shop asks for: whether the pages are the size you promised, which fonts have to travel with the file, and what is really embedded in the document.

Try the sample file above to see all three sections without uploading anything of your own.

Which files this metadata reader opens

The app accepts any file you can upload and returns the fields that file carries. These are the kinds people bring most often.

File kind Common formats What it usually shows
Photos JPG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF EXIF, camera, GPS
Documents PDF, DOCX, ODT Author, dates, software
Video MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI Length, resolution, codec
Audio MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A Tags, bitrate, length
Ebooks EPUB, MOBI, AZW3 Title, author, publisher
Anything else Any file you upload Whatever fields it holds

Nothing here is fixed. Two photos from two cameras can return very different fields, so the report always follows the file rather than a template.

When to check metadata

Three moments where reading the fields first saves trouble later.

Before you share a photo

A picture you post or mail carries its fields along with it. Read them first, then decide whether the photo goes out as it is.

Working out where a file came from

The dates, the device, and the software that touched a file are recorded inside it. That is often enough to place a photo or a document.

Preparing a document for print

Page size, embedded fonts, and embedded images decide whether a PDF prints the way you meant. The report shows all three before the file leaves your desk.

Your files, protected

The files people inspect here are often personal. This is exactly how yours are handled.

Encrypted connection

Every upload and download runs over TLS with modern ciphers, and personal data is stored encrypted.

No human access

Reading a file is fully automated. Nobody looks into your files or makes copies of them, and no backup of a user file is kept.

GDPR compliant

Processing follows the GDPR and runs in certified data centres. Your files are never used to train AI models, and the copyright stays yours.

Metadata viewer FAQ

How can I view metadata?

Upload the file at the top of this page and click View Metadata. The report opens on the same page, with every field grouped into labelled sections. Nothing has to be installed and no account is needed.

What is the best metadata viewer?

That depends on what you need to read. A metadata viewer is judged by how many fields it returns and how many kinds of file it opens. This one asks for the full field set rather than a short summary, and it takes photos, documents, video, audio, and ebooks in the same place.

Can anyone see photo metadata?

Yes. The fields travel inside the picture, so anyone holding the file can read them with a metadata viewer. Your own upload is another matter: it runs over an encrypted connection and the reading is automated, so nobody here looks at it. To take the fields out of a photo before you share it, use the metadata remover.

Can you recover metadata from photos?

No. A metadata viewer reads what is still inside the file. Once the fields have been stripped, or removed by a platform while the photo was uploaded, there is nothing left to read. You can write new values in by hand with the metadata editor.

Which file types does this metadata viewer support?

Any file you can upload. Photos, PDFs and other documents, video, audio, and ebooks are the usual ones, and the report follows whatever the file carries. Files up to 75 MB are covered by the free tier.

Is this metadata viewer free?

Yes. Reading metadata is free, needs no account, and has no premium version. The limits are the 75 MB free upload size and one file per report.

Can this metadata viewer read a PDF?

Yes, and a PDF gets more than the basics. Beside the document information block, the report lists the embedded fonts, the embedded images, and the size of every page in points.

Can I view metadata on a phone?

Yes. Open this page in the phone browser and pick the photo from your gallery. The file is read on the server, so an older phone manages it as well as a new one, and there is no app to install.
