What Does X Resolution Mean?

Images, videos and scanned documents can all carry a metadata field called X Resolution. Read on to find out what the X Resolution refers to and what its value means.
X Resolution tells you how tightly an image's pixels are packed along its horizontal direction, which is the x-axis in a coordinate system. It counts how many pixels fit into an inch or a centimetre of paper, so it is a printing instruction rather than a count of how many pixels the image has.
Which files carry it, and where the value comes from
The field comes from the EXIF and TIFF metadata blocks, so it turns up in JPEG, TIFF and camera RAW files, in PDFs, and in files saved by image editors. Scanners write it, and PNG files store the same idea under a different name. Video files in the QuickTime family, MOV and MP4, carry a horizontal resolution in their video track as well, where it is nearly always 72 and has no effect on playback.
Different sources fill it in differently. A camera writes a fixed default and does not measure anything. A scanner writes the density it actually scanned at, so the number is real. An image editor writes whatever document resolution was set when the file was exported, which may be a value someone typed months ago. Because it is declared rather than derived from the picture, the number can be meaningless without being wrong in any technical sense.
X Resolution never travels alone. A companion field, Resolution Unit, says what the number is counted per: inches or centimetres. Without it the value has nothing to mean.
What a typical value looks like
Expect a plain number whose unit lives in that companion field. The values you meet most are 72, the old screen default that many cameras still write, 96, 150, 300, which is a common choice for print, and 600 or more for scans.
If the unit is centimetres, the same density reads as a smaller number, because a centimetre is shorter than an inch: 300 pixels per inch is the same density as 118.11 per centimetre. The vertical counterpart is Y Resolution, and in almost every file the two match exactly.
Why it matters
This field decides how big an image comes out on paper. An image 3000 pixels wide at 300 pixels per inch prints ten inches wide and looks crisp. The very same file at 72 prints 41.67 inches wide from exactly the same pixels, and looks coarse because those pixels have been stretched over four times the distance.
What it does not do is change the picture or the file. Editing X Resolution alone adds no pixel and removes none, and it makes the file neither larger nor smaller on disk. On screen, most software ignores it completely, which is why a 72 sitting in a photo from a good camera is nothing to worry about and nothing to fix.
Where it does bite is layout and print work. A printer, a publisher or a stock library may require a particular value, and page layout software places an image at the size this field implies, so a stray value makes a picture drop into a document at the wrong scale. The number says nothing about you, your camera or where you were, so there is no privacy question attached to it.
