What Is White Balance?

If you are familiar with photography and filming, you have surely heard of White Balance before. If not, find out what it says about different image and video files.

White Balance records how the camera decided what counts as white in the light it was shooting in. It is the setting that keeps a white wall looking white, instead of turning orange under a table lamp or blue in open shade.

Why cameras need it, and which files carry it

Your eyes adjust to the colour of light without you noticing. A camera sensor does not. Every light source has its own colour, from the warm yellow of an old bulb to the cool blue of a cloudy sky, and the sensor records that colour faithfully, tint and all. White Balance is the correction that cancels it out, and it is either chosen by the photographer or guessed by the camera.

In photos the field turns up in JPEG, HEIC and TIFF files, and in camera RAW files such as CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW and DNG. The camera writes it at the moment the shutter fires, from whichever mode was active. Later, editing software can rewrite it: RAW converters such as Lightroom, Camera Raw, Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee record the white balance you settle on. Video files from cameras and camcorders, typically MOV and MP4, can carry the same setting.

It is worth knowing that the value can be stored in two places. There is the standard field that every camera writes, and there is the camera maker's own private section of the metadata, known as the maker notes, which is usually far more detailed.

What a typical value looks like

The standard field is blunt. It has only two possible values, Auto and Manual, so it tells you who made the decision rather than what the decision was.

The maker note version normally names the preset the camera was set to, and the names match the ones on the camera's own menu: Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash and Custom. Some cameras record a colour temperature in kelvin instead, or as well, so you see a bare number such as 5500. Some also store the multipliers that were applied to the red and blue channels, which is why an unfamiliar row of numbers can show up next to it.

Why it matters

White Balance is a colour quality field, and a wrong one is the single most common reason a photo looks orange, blue or slightly green. Reading it tells you whether the camera was guessing or had been told, which is often the explanation when a set of pictures from one session refuse to match each other. Mixed values across a batch of product shots or event photos point straight at a camera left on automatic, drifting from frame to frame as the light changed.

It also tells you how much room you have to fix things. In a RAW file the white balance is only an instruction, so changing it afterwards costs you nothing in quality. In a JPEG the correction has already been baked into the pixels, and putting it right becomes a repair rather than a setting.

The field carries no personal information. It describes light, not you, your location or your device. It does sit inside the same camera metadata block as fields that do identify a device or a place, so a photo that shows a White Balance value is worth checking for those too.
