Channels is a count: how many separate audio signals the file carries. Physically, a channel is the path a sound signal travels along, from the file being played to a speaker, and each channel holds its own independent sound.
Where the value comes from
Every audio file has a channel count, and so does the audio stream inside a video file. The number is fixed when the recording is made or the file is encoded, by the device or program doing the work: a phone recording a voice memo, a single microphone plugged into a laptop, or a mixing program exporting a finished track. It is reported per stream, so a video with two language tracks has a count for each.
What the number means
The value is the actual number of channels in the file. The usual ones are:
1- mono, a single signal2- stereo, a left and a right signal6- the six channels of a 5.1 surround mix8- the eight channels of a 7.1 surround mix
Surround sound is exactly why more channels exist: several independent signals are what create the impression of sound coming from all around the listener, as the name suggests. Other counts do occur, such as four channels from a recording made with four microphones. The related Channel Layout field names where the channels are supposed to sit, while Channels gives you the bare number.
One warning about reading it. Two channels do not prove a file is really in stereo. If a recording was made with one microphone and copied to both sides, the count still says 2 while the two channels are identical, and no amount of stereo equipment will make it wider.
Why it matters for your file
Channels drive file size. At the same quality per channel, doubling the number of channels roughly doubles the audio data, which is why a mono voice recording is so much smaller than a surround mix of the same length.
They also drive compatibility. Plenty of players, phone speakers and older devices handle only one or two channels and have to fold anything larger down, and tools that process speech, such as transcription software, often expect mono. Going the other way, the count is a useful diagnosis when something sounds wrong: if a report says 2 but you only hear anything on one side, one of the two channels is silent, which happens when a single clip-on microphone was recorded into a two-channel file. The field carries no personal information.
