What Is The Channel Layout?

When dealing with video or audio files, you might have come across metadata called Channel Layout. Find out what this is and what it tells you about your audio or video file.
The Channel Layout, sometimes called the channel mode, describes how the audio channels in a file are meant to be arranged around a listener. It is the difference between sound coming from one place, from two, or from all around you.
Where the value comes from
You find it in audio files such as WAV, MP3, AAC and FLAC, and in the audio stream inside video files such as MP4, MOV and MKV. In a video file it affects only the sound: the picture stream is untouched by it. The layout is set by whatever recorded or encoded the audio, from the microphone arrangement of a phone to the export settings of a mixing program, and a report gives it per stream. A film that carries a stereo track and a surround track shows a layout for each.
The values you will see
The layout is closely tied to the number of channels, and the common values are:
mono- one channel, one source and one direction for the soundstereo- two channels, left and right, which imitates sound arriving from different directions and is easy to hear on headphones2.1- left, right and a dedicated low-frequency channelquad- four channels at the corners5.1- six channels: front left, front right, center, the low-frequency effects channel that feeds a subwoofer, and two surrounds7.1- eight channels, adding a further pair of surrounds
You may see a variant spelling such as 5.1(side), which says which physical positions the surround channels are meant to use. A value of unknown means the file declares how many channels it has but never says where they belong.
Why it matters for your file
Playback compatibility is the main reason to care. A 5.1 track played through stereo speakers or headphones has to be folded down to two channels on the fly, and because film dialogue lives almost entirely in the center channel, that fold-down is why speech can end up quiet under the music and effects. The reverse is not possible: a stereo file has only two channels of information in it and cannot be turned into real surround, whatever a player labels the result.
It matters for editing too. When the layout says unknown, software has to guess which channel belongs to which speaker, and a wrong guess puts the dialogue behind you. And more channels means more audio data, so the layout is one of the things setting the size of the file. Nothing in this field describes you, your device or your location.
