What Is Scene Capture Type?

Photos shot with specific cameras may carry exif data labeled as the Scene Capture Type. Find out what this means and what it says about the photo.
Scene Capture Type records what kind of scene the camera thought it was photographing. It is a hint about the shooting mode that was active, written into the picture by the camera itself at the moment the shutter opened.
Which files carry it and where the value comes from
This is an exif field, so it appears in photos: JPEG and HEIC files from cameras and phones, TIFF images, and most raw camera formats. Video shot on cameras that write exif style metadata can carry it too. Editing software normally passes it through unchanged when you save a copy.
No person fills this in. The camera writes it, and a great many cameras do not write it at all, which is why the row can be missing entirely or show up empty or as unknown in a report.
What the value looks like
Unlike a free text field, this one has a short fixed list of possible answers. It is stored as a small number and reports usually print the matching word:

So a typical report row reads Scene Capture Type: Standard. A later revision of the exif specification also allows a value meaning other, so an unfamiliar entry is not necessarily an error.
Two things are easy to confuse with it. The first is the long list of picture styles your camera menu offers - neutral, faithful, monochrome, vivid, and the rest. Those are the manufacturer's own presets, and they are recorded in the manufacturer's own fields under names of their choosing, not here; the names and the settings behind them differ from camera to camera. The second is Scene Type, a separate field that only states whether the image was photographed directly or produced some other way.
Why it matters
The value helps you read the rest of the report. A scene mode is a bundle of decisions the camera made for you about exposure time, aperture and sensitivity, so seeing Night scene explains a long shutter speed, visible noise and any motion blur, while Portrait goes with a wide aperture and a softly blurred background. On its own the field is a small clue; alongside shutter speed, aperture and ISO it tells you why the picture looks the way it does, and what to change if you want a different result.
It is also useful when sorting a large batch of images, since it separates shots taken in a special mode from ordinary ones.
By itself this field identifies nobody. It names no person, no place and no device. It is worth remembering, though, that it only exists because the file came out of a camera, and it sits in the same exif block as fields that are far more revealing, such as GPS coordinates, the date and time of the shot and camera serial numbers. If you are stripping metadata for privacy, deal with that whole block rather than this one row.
