Metadata is the information a file keeps about itself. A photo records the camera, the lens, the exposure, the date, and very often the GPS coordinates of the spot it was taken from. Photographers call that block EXIF data.
Documents keep a different set. A PDF or a Word file stores the author name, the company, the software that produced it, and the times it was created and last saved. Video and audio files carry tags for the recording device, the encoder, the artist, and the album.
None of it shows up when you open the file, and all of it travels with the file into every email, chat message, and upload.
